BEIRUT (PIC)– The Hamas Movement has condemned the assassination attempt against Sheikh Mohammed Al-Haj the member of the Palestine Scholars League in Lebanon who was shot at while mediating an end to the crisis in Nahr Al-Bared refugee camp in northern Lebanon.

A responsible source in the Hamas Movement said in a press release issued in Beirut Monday night that the attempt was not personal but rather targeted the mediation efforts to end the standoff at the refugee camp.

The Movement urged the Palestinian joint follow-up committee to assume its role in a bid to ward off dangers of those seeking to ignite strife and asked that committee to firmly denounce the crime and see to it that the involved culprits are prosecuted.

Hamas asserted that efforts by the PSL to end the conflict peacefully must continue and all Palestinian factions should support those mediation bids.

For its part the alliance of Palestinian forces in Lebanon voiced utmost denunciation of the attack on Sheikh Al-Haj at the hands of a “third party” at the entrance to the refugee camp while mediating an end to the crisis in Nahr Al-Bared between the Lebanese army and Fatah Al-Islam group.

The alliance championed a political solution to the crisis in a way ensuring security for the camp reconstruction of what was destroyed and return of its inhabitants and in a way preserving Lebanon’s sovereignty security and stability.

It asked the Lebanese government to halt military operations to make room for political efforts that should take into consideration the interests of both the Lebanese and Palestinian peoples.
