Hamas criticizes PA for refusing to release journalist

Tuesday 21-February-2017

The Hamas Movement has strongly denounced the Palestinian Authority (PA) for detaining and abusing journalist Sami al-Sa’ie after his recent release from an Israeli jail calling his arrest as “a crime against freedoms of opinion and the press.”

“The PA security apparatuses’ persistence in coordinating with the enemy carrying out political arrests and persecuting resistance fighters activists and journalists are antinational and immoral behavior” spokesman for the Movement Abdul-Latif al-Qanoua stated in a press release on Monday.

Qanoua called on the PA to end all forms of security cooperation with Israel and its arbitrary arrests of citizens and release all political detainees and journalists from its jails.

The PA intelligence apparatus arrested journalist Sami al-Sa’ie on February 2 and accused him of provoking sectarian feuds before a Palestinian court ordered his release seven days later.

However the intelligence agency refused to comply with the court order extended his detention for another 15 days on allegations of receiving money from illegal groups and transferred him to Ariha prison.

His detention by the intelligence happened two months after his release from an Israeli jail where he spent nine months on a charge of inciting against Israel on social media.
