Hamas declares rejection of early elections

Monday 30-April-2007

GAZA (PIC)– The Hamas Movement on Monday categorically rejected calls by certain Arab and European parties for early parliamentary elections in the PA-run lands.

Ismail Redwan the Hamas spokesman in Gaza said that the Palestinian people had already chosen its representatives over a year ago in internationally-monitored elections.

“Calls for early elections constitute an intervention in Palestinian internal affairs which we refuse” Redwan underlined asserting that the elections that were organized last year were “legitimate and legal”.

He said that those who interpreted PA premier Ismail Haneyya’s statement that national decisions would be adopted in the event the western-led siege on the Palestinian people was not lifted by saying that those decisions would be calling for early elections were wrong.

A number of media outlets published reports claiming that Arab and European countries had called on the PA to hold early legislative elections in order to guarantee an end to the siege.
