Hamas denies secret contacts with Fatah

Monday 9-July-2007

GAZA (PIC)– The Hamas Movement on Monday affirmed its insistence on serious dialogue with the Fatah faction as the sole way out of the current Palestinian political crisis denying holding any in-camera meetings with Fatah.

The Movement underlined in a statement that the Fatah leadership is the one refusing dialogue explaining that Hamas’s call for dialogue is based on its sense of responsibility and not out of weakness.

Media reports claimed that secret contact channels were opened between the two organizations in Stockholm under western auspices.

Meanwhile Sami Abu Zuhri one of the Hamas spokesmen in the Gaza Strip expressed surprise at a statement for Saeb Uraikat PLO top negotiator (with Israel) in which he denied the Egyptian security delegation’s intention to return to Gaza while under Hamas’s control.

Abu Zuhri told the independent Palestinian daily ‘Palestine’ published on Monday that it was strange that Uraikat would declare himself a spokesman for the Egyptian delegation.

The Egyptian team has announced it would return to Gaza soon the spokesman said adding “We in Hamas welcome its return and affirm we will provide all facilities to ensure success of its mission”. He affirmed that contacts were ongoing between Hamas and the Egyptian leadership and the security delegation.
