Hamas factions work together to confront Abbas’s pressures on Gaza

Friday 28-April-2017

The Hamas Movement has affirmed it is working together with other Palestinian factions to form a comprehensive national movement to confront the new measures taken by Palestinian Authority chief Mahmoud Abbas against the Gaza Strip.

Spokesman for Hamas Abdul-Latif al-Qanua told the Palestinian Information Center (PIC) that Abbas’s new pressures on Gaza and his recent decision to deprive the impoverished enclave from Israeli electricity fall in line with the Israeli goals.

Qanua described Abbas’s measures as “unethical and violation of national values” calling for urgent Arab and international moves to end the blockade on Gaza and save it from looming humanitarian disasters.

Israel’s Channel 10 said on Thursday that the PA presidency had informed Yoav Mordechai the coordinator of the Israeli government activities in the territories that it would no longer fund the electricity Israel supplies to Gaza.

Such move could lead to a complete power shutdown in the besieged territory whose two million people already endure blackouts for much of the day.

Yedioth Ahronoth newspaper quoted a senior Israeli military official as saying that the Gaza population would live without electricity in the coming days and that the army would follow up Hamas’s reaction to the crisis.
