Hamas hails European organizations’ positions against settlements

Wednesday 23-February-2022

Hamas Movement welcomed the campaign launched by European civil society organizations aimed to collect one million signatures to demand the European Commission to “stop its business with the Zionist colonial settlements.”

In a statement issued Tuesday the group commended “these honorable stances.”

It further called on the free peoples of the world to confront the acceleration of the colonial settlement expansion and the escalation of the colonial settlers’ aggression against the Palestinian people in the West Bank.

Hamas also called on the supporters of justice to support the right of the Palestinian people to regain their land and achieve their aspirations of liberation return and self-determination.

Earlier this week activists have launched a campaign calling on Europe to ban trade with illegal Israeli settlements.

The campaign includes a citizen-led petition that received widespread support from dozens of civil society groups including Human Rights Watch.

“Settlements unlawfully rob local populations of their land resources and livelihoods. No country should be enabling the trade in goods produced as a result of land theft displacement and discrimination” said Bruno Stagno HRW’s chief advocacy officer.

The petition was submitted to the European Citizen’s Initiative a lobbying tool set up to allow citizens to petition European institutions in September 2021 and was accepted on 20 February 2022 meaning it can now start collecting signatures.

The petition has already received backing from over 100 civil society organizations grassroots movements trade unions and politicians.
