Hamas lauds position of UN-appointed experts against annexation plan

Thursday 18-June-2020

The Hamas Movement has welcomed the statement that was issued by several independent human rights experts appointed by the UN against Israel’s annexation plan which will start as early as next month.

In a recent join statement nearly 50 independent human rights experts — appointed by the UN Human Rights Council — has called on the international community to oppose Israel’s intent to announce the annexation of significant parts of the occupied Palestinian West Bank in early July.

The Movement appreciated in remarks made by its spokesman Abdul-Latif al-Qanu the unanimous opposition of those experts to the US position that supports the annexation plan.

It also said that the experts’ statement contributed to exposing the stance of the US administration and increasing its isolation from the international position.

“The [Israeli] occupation government’s persistence in and insistence on carrying out the annexation plan despite the growing international legal and UN positions against it proves that it scorns such positions defies the international law and flouts international and UN resolutions” the Movement said.

In their statement the experts described Israel’s annexation of occupied territory as “a serious violation of the Charter of the United Nations and the Geneva Conventions and contrary to the fundamental rule affirmed many times by the United Nations Security Council and General Assembly that the acquisition of territory by war or force is inadmissible.”

“The international community has prohibited annexation precisely because it incites wars economic devastation political instability systematic human rights abuses and widespread human suffering.”

“What would be left of the West Bank would be a Palestinian Bantustan islands of disconnected land completely surrounded by Israel and with no territorial connection to the outside world” the statement continued.

They warned that the annexation plan would intensify human rights violations committed against the Palestinians during five decades of Israeli occupation which include land confiscation settler violence home demolitions and excessive use of force and torture.
