Hamas raps UNRWA’s mass dismissal of employees

Thursday 26-July-2018

The Hamas Movement’s refugee affairs bureau has condemned UNRWA’s decision to lay off hundreds of its employees in the Gaza Strip as a “step devoid of humanity.”

Hamas’s refugee affairs bureau released its statement after UNRWA issued an administrative circular informing about 1000 of its employees of its decision to remove them from their jobs and give them severance pay.

The circular also state that some employees will be given temporary jobs at the agency.

Hamas considered the mass lay-off decision at the agency “a first step to dwarf or dismantle UNRWA as part of an international plot led by the US which created the crisis.”

According to Hamas’s refugee affairs bureau the UNRWA staff union in Gaza has provided the UN refugee agency with an effective solution that will help it save around 2000000 dollars an amount that is five times larger than the 400000 dollars the agency is seeking to save through laying off employees.

“The large sum of money which the agency also intends to pay as severance pay for the axed employees should be spared and used to retain the jobs” Hamas added.

“This means that the crisis is not financial or due to the absence of viable solutions but it is caused by an autocratic administration implementing illegal and inhuman international agendas” Hamas underlined.
