Monday 18-June-2007

GAZA (PIC)– Amidst overwhelming popular approval and welcome Hamas Movement has started practical steps with the aim to restore law and order all over the Gaza Strip particularly in Khan Younis district south of the Strip.

Official sources in the Movement affirmed that Hamas’ armed wing the Qassam Brigades (QB) were able to convince a big Palestinian clan in Khan Younis to surrender their weapons to the authorities in a very cordial manner and without any friction.

The good step the sources added was followed by a number of similar steps in which the Movement convened with heads of the Palestinian clans and urged them to convince their clan members to surrender their guns peacefully which the heads of the clans widely welcomed after they felt they will be indeed secure under Hamas.

Moreover the Movement met with Mayor Fayez Abu Shammala of the city and extended field and logistic assistance to the municipality so as to enable it carry out its duties in the best way possible.

Roads and markets in the town were cleared by elements of the PA interior ministry’s executive force of any illegal appearances amidst wide approval from the public.

In addition the executive force headed to Palestinian merchandisers and urged them not to monopolize foodstuff and goods and not to increase prices so as not to overburden Gaza citizens.

The merchants vowed to cooperate with the executive force after they received stern warning that monopolists will be dealt with according to the law.

Officials in Hamas Movement also met with officials in the PA interior ministry and the communication company with the aim to find better headquarters and places for them to carry out their mission properly and safely.

Executive force still live and vigorous:
For his part spokesman of the executive force Islam Shahwan rejected Abbas’ decree outlawing the force and described it as “hasty”.

“The PA leadership that is now present in the West Bank should have worked for bridging the gap between Palestinian factions and for soothing tension in the Palestinian arena instead of issuing such hasty decrees that harm Palestinian national interests” Shahwan affirmed in reaction to the decree.

“We know that such decrees are part of narrow personal and factional perspectives and frameworks” he further affirmed.

More important Shahwan expressed hope that kidnapped BBC reporter Alan Johnston will be soon released explaining that the force were engaging the kidnappers in intensive negotiations to secure the reporter’s freedom.

“There were good and important signs in this regard as we hope that the coming days will witness a breakthrough in this file” he pointed out.
