Hamas urges PLO to stop passiveness inaction over refugee camps crises

Monday 4-June-2007

NABLUS (PIC)– Hamas Movement has warned of possible dominance of military solutions in dealing with problems in Palestinian refugee camps in Lebanon urging the PLO to stop passiveness and inaction towards the crises.

The Movement explained that what has happened in the refugee camp of Ein Al-Helwa (the biggest Palestinian refugee camp in Lebanon) Sunday was a clear evidence of a possible shifting by the Lebanese army to military options in treating minor disputes in the refugee camps.

“Hamas views the military treatment of minor problems in the Palestinian refugee camps as dangerous and transgressing the Ta’if agreement that defined the status of Palestinian refugee camps in Lebanon and preserved safety of the refugees there” said one of the Movement’s spokesmen.

The Movement furthermore highlighted the importance of resorting to peaceful and diplomatic means in resolving any crises in those camps and away from military options so as not to jeopardize lives of the refugees.

Moreover the spokesman urged the PLO leadership to “get out of the circle of passive stands and inaction” and not to be dragged into sanctioning “extremist” solutions suggested by certain Lebanese parties in dealing with the crises.

“The PLO must live up to its mandate as the sponsor of the Palestinian people welfare wherever they are and to defend rights of the Palestinians living in diaspora” the spokesman furthermore underlined.

Finally he underscored the importance of preserving dignity and prestige of the Lebanese army and to punish those who attacked it but at the same time he asserted lives of Palestinian and Lebanese civilians must be protected.
