Hamas Movement on Monday urged the donors conference scheduled to be held Tuesday in Brussels to unconditionally support the UN Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees (UNRWA).
Several donor countries are scheduled to convene on Tuesday in the Belgium capital Brussels under the auspices of Jordan and Sweden to discuss resuming the financial support to the UN agency.
Hamas stressed in a press release issued ahead of the conference the urgent need to ensure positive outcomes that guarantee a strategic vision for the UNRWA.
“Palestinian refugees and the right of return are a central issue in our struggle against the Zionist occupation. The Palestinian people must be compensated for seven decades of suffering” the group added.
“Therefore” Hamas stressed “the protection of UNRWA’s mandate is the duty of the international community that was a key party in creating the problem of Palestinian refugees.”
“The financial crisis being experienced by UNRWA is serious as it has become a fixed target for the Zionist occupation which seeks to end its role and eliminate its mandate in order to bury the issue of the Palestine refugees.”
The UNRWA was established by the UN General Assembly in 1949 and was mandated to provide assistance and protection to some 5.6 million Palestinian refugees in the West Bank Gaza Strip Lebanon Syria and Jordan.
