Hamas urges gov’t to respond to efforts to end Gaza power crisis

Thursday 12-January-2017

The Hamas Movement has appealed to the de facto government of Rami al-Hamdallah to respond urgently to all the efforts being made to solve the electricity crisis in the Gaza Strip.

In a press release on Wednesday Hamas spokesman Fawzi Barhoum reiterated his Movement’s readiness to positively deal with any effort or realistic solution to end the power problem on condition that it must be agreed upon by all concerned parties and respected by the government.

Barhoum condemned the government of al-Hamdallah for its recent statement on the power crisis describing its remarks as “hollow misleading to the public opinion and a distortion of the facts.”

The spokesman stressed that his Movement had dealt positively and responsibly with all previous efforts to find a solution to the problem.

“We have cooperated with all efforts either with regard to re-forming the power company’s board of directors or creating a higher council for energy and enabling the government to take over the entire electricity file and this is what has already been agreed upon with the follow-up committee of the national and Islamic forces but the government obstructed all these efforts” Barhoum stated.

He also refuted the government’s claim that it pays one billion shekels every year to supply Gaza with its power needs affirming that the government pays nothing for that and persists in shirking its responsibilities towards Gaza.
