Hamas welcomes UN motion on ICJ opinion on Israeli occupation

Saturday 31-December-2022

The Hamas Movement has welcomed the UN General Assembly’s adoption of a resolution by a majority vote calling on the International Court of Justice (ICJ) to give its opinion on the legal consequences of Israel’s illegal occupation of Palestinian territories.

In a statement on Saturday Hamas considered the resolution “an achievement and an important step towards ending the Israeli occupation and its violations against the Palestinian people’s national rights.”

The Movement appreciated the positions of the countries that voted in favor of the resolution and sided with the justice of the Palestinian cause and the Palestinian people’s right to freedom and independence.

It called for international action to hold the occupation state accountable for its ongoing crimes against the Palestinian people and its denial of their rights that are enshrined in the international law.

The General Assembly passed a resolution on Friday requesting an opinion from the ICJ on the legal implications of Israel’s occupation of Palestine and its “practices and settlement activities affecting the rights of the Palestinian people.”

The resolution was passed by a vote of 87 to 26 with 53 abstentions. Russia and China voted in favor of the motion.
