Hamdan warns of American-Zionist pressures to foil the Makkah agreement

Sunday 18-February-2007

BEIRUT (PIC)– Osama Hamdan the Hamas Movement’s representative in Lebanon has warned that the USA and Israel were trying to foil the Makkah agreement between Hamas and Fatah movements on formation of a national unity government.

Hamdan in a statement to the Syrian TV channel said that the Makkah agreement had aborted the USA-Israel scheme to drag the Palestinians into a civil war.

He predicted that American secretary of state Condoleezza Rice and Israeli premier Ehud Olmert would pressure PA chief Mahmoud Abbas in their expected meeting on Monday to annul the agreement.

Hamdan however opined that the agreement will persist despite the American-Zionist pressures affirming that formation of the government was approaching.

Hamas spokesman in the Gaza Strip Fawzi Barhum also said that Israel and its agents were trying all means to foil the agreement.

Barhum who was commenting on the shooting at the house of minister of planning and acting finance minister Samir Abu Aisha and at the house of Najah University lecturer Ghassan Dhukan in Nablus city said that the incident was meant to foil the atmosphere of conciliation.

The PA government issued a similar statement on Saturday saying that the incident was obviously meant to frustrate the Palestinian people and to bring tension back to the Palestinian street.

Acting PLC speaker Dr. Ahmed Bahar called for a comprehensive national conciliation to heal the past “regrettable incidents” between Fatah and Hamas movements.

Mohammed Nazzal the political bureau member of the Hamas Movement asserted that procedural steps to form the national unity government have started  and that consultations were underway with various parliamentary blocs for this purpose.
