Haneyya: Decision to postpone elections “unfortunate”

Saturday 1-May-2021

Head of Hamas’s political bureau has described Palestinian Authority (PA) chief Mahmoud Abbas’s decision to postpone the Palestinian elections as “unfortunate.”

“The unfortunate decision to postpone the elections has put the Palestinian arena in a vacuum-like zone. There are major issues that should have been addressed by the institutions that are formed after the elections” Haneyya said in televised remarks on Friday.

“Deferring the elections means revoking the decision to hold them and confiscating the Palestinians’ political right” he added.

“There is no disagreement over the need to hold elections in Jerusalem but the disagreement is over making the Palestinian decision hostage to the Israeli occupation’s decision” the Hamas political chief underlined.

He stressed that “the Palestinians are united in the battle for Jerusalem and insist on holding the elections in Jerusalem.”
