Head of Hamas’s political bureau Ismail Haneyya has offered his condolences over the passing of Salim az-Zanoun former head of the Palestinian National Council who died at age 89 in the Jordanian capital Amman on Wednesday.
According to a brief statement issued by Haneyya’s office the Hamas leader talked over the phone with Zanoun’s brothers and expressed his heartfelt condolences over their loss.
During his conversation with the bereaved brothers Haneyya recalled Zanoun’s great contributions to his people and national cause during his political life and his tenure as head of the National Council.
The Hamas leader described Zanoun as a “great Palestinian and Arab figure” and his passing as a “sad loss for everyone” asking Allah Almighty to bestow His mercy upon him and make Paradise his eternal dwelling.
Salim Zanoun was born in Gaza on December 28 1933. He served as chairman of the Palestinian National Council from 1993 to early 2022 and he was one of the Fatah Movement’s founders and member of its central committee.
