Hayya: Ceasefire efforts will succeed if Gaza siege ends

Thursday 9-August-2018

Member of Hamas’s political bureau Khalil al-Hayya has affirmed that the Palestinian people is not an easy target in the presence of the Palestinian resistance that will defend them with all it has.

In an interview conducted with him by al-Jazeera satellite channel on Wednesday Hayya said that Israel’s recent bombing of a resistance post in Beit Lahia vindicated further that its attacks can only be deterred by military response.

“If the blockade on Gaza was lifted and the occupation ended its aggression the ceasefire efforts would continue and bear fruit” he underlined.

As for the efforts to end the Palestinian division the Hamas official said that the delegation of Hamas had left for Cairo carrying a national vision consistent with the positions of other factions and the Palestinian people’s demands.

He pointed out that Hamas was surprised by the presence of another Egyptian paper for the Palestinian reconciliation after it had accepted the first paper but he asserted that any step aimed at ending the division has to start by lifting the sanctions imposed by president Mahmoud Abbas on Gaza.

“We want a new national government capable of implementing the requirements of the reconciliation after the current government failed to achieve that” he added.

Hayya stressed that his Movement “is seeking national unity whose ultimate goal is to build institutions for the Palestinian people based on partnership according to the Cairo agreement signed in 2011 and the Beirut agreement of January 2017.”

Replying to a question about the issue of swapping prisoners with Israel the Hamas official accused Israeli leaders of lying to their people when claiming they were making efforts to have their captives in Gaza released.

However he affirmed that his Movement would be ready for a new swap deal if the Israeli side respected the previous deal and released all those who were rejailed.
