Hayya: Unity gov’t can embark on its duties in Gaza smoothly

Sunday 15-October-2017

Serious measures have been taken in Gaza to enable the consensus government to take up its mission in the blockaded enclave political bureau member of Hamas Khalil al-Hayya said on Saturday evening.

In an interview aired on al-Aqsa TV Channel al-Hayya said Hamas has made several concessions to heal internal divisions.

“A meeting is to be held between Fatah and Hamas in early December to assess the progress of the reconciliation accord” he said. “A roadmap will be devised by security officials in the West Bank and Gaza to implement the terms of the Cairo deal.”

According to al-Hayya the latest reconciliation agreement ruled for forming an administrative and legal committee to work out issues related to the file of Gaza’s civil servants who have had their salaries cut by the Palestinian Authority along with those who have been forced into early retirement.

“The government seeks to take over the crossings and include taxes to its budget; yet it should also pay workers’ salaries . . . particularly for the months of September and October” he stated.

“We need to come up with a comprehensive strategy that all parties agree upon in order to enable the government to run the crossings” he said.

Al-Hayya also stated that Fatah and Hamas have agreed to form a consensus government lineup to set the stage for national elections. “We long for a government that upholds Palestinians’ rights takes it upon its shoulders to serve its people and regains the trust of the Palestinian Legislative Council.”
