Health conditions of hunger-striking administrative detainees worsen

Two Palestinian prisoners Khalil Awawdeh and Ra’ed al-Rayan have been facing worsening and serious health conditions for several days as a result of the open-ended hunger strike they staged in protest at their administrative detention.

According to the Palestinian Commission of Detainees’ and Ex-Detainees’ Affairs Awawdeh and Rayan have entered day 67 and day 32 respectively of their hunger strike.

As a result of his protracted hunger strike Awawdeh suffers from a persistent headache joint pains emaciation extreme fatigue irregular heartbeats and breathing and frequent vomiting of blood.

The Israeli administration of Ramla jail recently transferred Awawdeh 40 to a civilian hospital after a sharp decline in his health condition before taking him back later to the jail.

As for 28-year-old Rayan he suffers from a constant headache and joint pains and uses a wheelchair to move.

He staged his hunger strike to protest an Israeli decision extending his administrative detention for an additional four months.

Rayan who is being held in Ofer jail was kidnaped from his home in Beit Duqqu village northwest of Occupied Jerusalem on December 3 2021 and soon later an Israeli military court ordered his detention administratively for six months.

In a related context the wife of hunger striker Awawdeh appealed to the Palestinian factions and the Palestinian people to move to save her husband’s life and support his protest step.

Dalal Awawdeh said that her husband affirmed in a letter he sent recently through a lawyer that he would continue his open-ended hunger strike without taking any intravenous fluids or vitamins until he attained his freedom.
