Hundreds of Jewish settlers stormed the al-Aqsa Mosque amid tight police protection early on Monday.
Some of the settlers wore the priest dress marking the so-called Hebrew New Year.
Meanwhile Palestinian worshipers gathered at the al-Aqsa while shouting Takbeer. Some of them were besieged at the tribal prayer hall amid heavy fire of teargas and sound bombs.
At least one young man was detained during the events while many others were violently attacked including women.
In recent days the Israeli police issued orders banning a number of Islamic Awqaf employees and Muslim worshipers from entering the Aqsa Mosque for different periods and allowed scores of settlers to desecrate it under the pretext of the Jewish holidays.
