Hundreds protest in Jordan against water-energy deal with Israel

Saturday 4-December-2021

Hundreds of people took into the streets in different Jordanian governorates for the second consecutive week to protest a water-for-energy agreement between Jordan and Israel.

After Friday prayers hundreds of people gathered outside the Husseini Mosque in downtown Amman demanding the dropping of all agreements signed with Israel including the Declaration of the ‘energy-for-water’ deal.

The protesters further called on the parliament to reject the agreement saying it moved towards normalizing ties with Israel while it continues to occupy the Palestinian territories.

Jordan Israel and the UAE signed the deal last month in the presence of US climate envoy John Kerry.

Under the agreement Jordan would install 600 megawatts of solar power generating capacity to be exported to Israel while Israel would provide water-scarce Jordan with 200 million cubic meters of desalinated water.

The agreement if implemented would be one of the largest cooperation projects since the countries signed a peace deal 27 years ago.

However critics say the deal leaves Jordan dependent on Israel without providing a solution to the country’s water problems.
