IOA extends administrative custody of former minister municipal council member

Monday 19-October-2009

RAMALLAH (PIC)– The Israeli occupation authority (IOA) has extended the administrative detention without trial or charge of former minister of prisoners Wasfi Kabaha only two days before his release for four more months at the request of the Israeli intelligence apparatus.

The Ahrar center for prisoners’ studies and human rights said in a statement on Monday that the extension is the 8th of its kind recalling that the former minister was detained on 23/7/2007.

Director of Ahrar center Fuad Al-Khafsh described the IOA policy of administrative detention as “criminal” and aimed at subjugating the detainee and tampering with his family’s nerves.

The director noted that Kabaha who is suffering from diabetes and hypertension is regularly taken to Ramle prison hospital for medical checking.

The IOA also on Sunday evening extended the administrative custody of Nazih Abu Oun the municipal council member of Jaba’a village south of Jenin for the 8th consecutive time.

Abu Oun was detained on 24/5/2007 in the Israeli campaign of arrests that grouped more than 60 Palestinian ministers MPs municipal council members and Hamas activists.

Khafsh noted that all those captured in that campaign were released with the exception of both Abu Oun and Kabaha.

He said that the Israeli intelligence asks the military court to extend Abu Oun’s detention alleging that his release would pose a threat to security and supplies “secret evidence” for this purpose.

Abu Oun is the third longest serving administrative detainee followed by Kabaha.
