IOF arrests Palestinian activist in al-Khalil

Sunday 3-September-2017

The Israeli Occupation Forces (IOF) arrested Sunday a Palestinian activist during an anti-settlement demonstration in al-Khalil to the south of West Bank.

Local sources identified the detainee as Raed Abu Armila reporting that he was rounded up when clashes broke out between Israeli settlers and Palestinian protesters.

The demonstration was organized in protest against granting Israeli settlers administrative power to manage their own affairs in al-Khalil.

During the event protesters called for removing all Israeli military restrictions in the city.

Some 800 settlers alongside 250000 Palestinians reside in al-Khalil. Israeli occupation authorities granted the settlers the right to manage their municipal affairs.

The Israeli army explained in a statement that the settlers were managing their daily affairs through a local council that did not have legal status.

Through the latest decree the settlers will be able to form a council that represents the Jewish settler quarter in al-Khalil.

The Israeli anti-settlement Peace Now organization said that the decision strengthens the apartheid regime in the city.
