IPS imposes new sanctions on Palestinian prisoners

Friday 26-August-2022

A state of tension spread in Israeli jails after the Israeli Prison Services (IPS) imposed a new set of sanctions.

The IPS has confiscated Palestinian prisoners’ fans and electrical appliances during a massive crackdown the Palestinian Prisoners Society (PPS) said.

The prisoners earlier decided to dissolve their representative bodies in all Israeli prisons.

For his part the head of the Prisoners and Ex-Prisoners Affairs Authority Qadri Abu Bakr warned against any Israeli escalation against the prisoners including mass crackdown and break-ins.

He further pointed out that Israeli special forces were deployed in large numbers in all Israeli jails escorted by police dogs.

Abu Bakr called on the Red Cross and all the international human rights institutions to “make urgent visits to the Israeli prisons and detention centers to prevent any further sanctions.”

A few days ago the Palestinian Captive Movement’s National Emergency Committee announced that it will start to launch a series of measures on Mondays and Wednesdays for the next two weeks before staging next month a mass hunger strike involving prisoners from different Palestinian factions.

According to PPS the prisoners aim to pressure Israeli jailers to improve their incarceration conditions.

The prisoners have accused the Israeli prison service of failing to fulfill its previous pledge to lift restrictions that were imposed on them in the aftermath of the jail break by six inmates from Gilboa Prison last year.

Those Israeli restrictions include among other things solitary confinement and the repeated transfer of dozens of inmates to other prisons.
