Int’l campaign calls on Ki-moon to secure arrival of Gaza-bound flotilla

Saturday 2-April-2011

GAZA (PIC)– The international campaign to break the Gaza siege has called on UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon to see that the Freedom Flotilla 2 lands safely in the Gaza Strip at its due date of arrival in May.

The statement comes after Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu called on Ki-moon to help thwart the humanitarian aid mission.

The international campaign argued in a press release on Saturday that the flotilla is set to carry out a humanitarian task which should be protected under international law.

The practices and repeated attacks of the Israeli occupation authorities and continued siege of the Gaza Strip for nearly four years pose a blatant violation of international treaties and conventions the statement says.

The campaign said it strongly denounces Israel’s ”biased” incitement campaign targeting the international convoy in a bid by Israeli occupation authorities to thwart the mission from setting sail and landing in Gaza.

The statement also highlights the ”failure” of the international community in bringing Israeli leaders to justice following the attack on the first freedom flotilla last May that left nine activists dead and injured scores.

The international campaign emphasized the need to conduct a ”neutral reliable and transparent” investigation in line with international standards in regard to the ”piracy” that took place against the first freedom flotilla mission.

The second flotilla is scheduled to be larger than the first and will include more than 15 ships and hundreds of activists among them parliamentarians independent figures and civil society representatives.
