The Iranian ministry of foreign affairs has strongly denounced what it called “the deliberate killing” of Al Jazeera correspondent Shireen Abu Akleh in the occupied West Bank on Wednesday.
In a statement on Thursday spokesman for the ministry Saeed Khatibzadeh expressed his country’s “condolences to Abu Akleh’s family Al Jazeera news network and the journalists who are devoted to the Palestinian cause and Jerusalem on Abu Akleh’s martyrdom.”
Khatibzadeh described her killing as “clear evidence of the Israeli occupation’s disregard for the role of the press media and journalists in enlightening the audience and revealing the truth.”
He called on international human rights groups and media unions to conduct independent investigations into Abu Akleh’s death and hold the occupation regime accountable for this crime.
