The President of the Iraqi Tennis Federation Majid Al-Ugaili has announced that the Iraqi team has withdrawn from the Romanian tennis championship for refusing to face an Israeli opponent.
In a press statement Ugaili identified the Iraqi tennis stars who refused to play against the Israeli team on Thursday as Nasr Mahdi and Mohammad Al-Mahdi.
“The prescheduled matches of the championship had set the Iraqi team in the face of the Israeli occupation’s team” Ugaili underlined adding that the match was supposed to take place at the beginning of the championship competitions which started last Wednesday.
Several Arab athletes have recently withdrawn from world championships for refusing to play against Israeli opponents in support of the just Palestinian cause which is an effective means to resist normalization.
