Israel re-expands Gaza fishing zone

Sunday 26-May-2019

The Israeli occupation authorities on Sunday decided to re-expand the fishing zone in the Gaza Strip to 15 nautical miles after it had been reduced for several days.

Head of the Palestinian Fishermen Syndicate in Gaza Nizar Ayyash said that the Israeli authorities have expanded the fishing area to 15 nautical miles for the first time since 2006 but small fishing boats are only allowed to sail within 12 nautical miles.

The move followed an Egypt-mediated agreement between Israel and Palestinian factions in the Gaza Strip.

On Thursday the Israeli navy opened fire at Palestinian fishermen working off the shores of the besieged enclave and informed them through loudspeakers that the fishing zone would be reduced to 5 nautical miles.

The Israeli occupation navy on almost a daily basis chases Gaza fishermen shoots at them arrests them or seizes their boats and equipment.
