Like all landmarks of history heritage and geography in Occupied Jerusalem Khan Al-Zait Market is a victim of the Israeli Judaization in an attempt to change all features of the city following the green light that America gave to Israel.
The municipality of East Jerusalem announced that the so-called The East Jerusalem Development Company (PAMI) will start working in the coming days to restore what it called the development and renovation of Khan al-Zayt Market in the old town of the city.
The municipality said in its announcement to the residents and merchants of the Old City of Jerusalem that renovation works will be carried out from Alamoud Gate to Attarin Market claiming that it aims at “improving the features of the city.”
According to the municipality of the Israeli occupation the most important works that will be covered: Paving the main street in Khan al-Zayt up to the market of Attarin replacing the locks and changing the doors colors and umbrellas.
Chairman of the Committee of the merchants of Jerusalem Hegazi Al-Risheq said that the Israeli occupation government since the US decision to recognize Jerusalem as the capital of Israel “is trying to emphasize its control over the city of Jerusalem in all forms including services and acts as if Jerusalem is an integral part of Israel and has allocated large funds for this purpose.”
He stressed that whether merchants reject or accept the project it will be implemented as part of the plan of the municipality of the Israeli occupation to change the landmarks in the Old City.
Merchants expressed their fears because of the attempts by Israel to seize the old tiles of the market and re-install them in an unknown place.
The Khan al-Zayt is a commercial market packed with shoes and clothes shops as well as spices pickles and more.
The Khan al-Zayt Market is under the danger of collapse because of the excavation carried out by the Israeli municipality under the Old City which led to the collapse of parts of the land near the entrance of the market. This is in addition to stealing the old market’s stones and replacing them with new ones as part of a larger campaign to steal the city’s holy monuments especially in the Old City to erase the city’s history and falsify it.
