Israeli army arrests 3 individuals near the border fence with Lebanon

Tuesday 10-May-2022

The Israeli army said on Monday evening that it had arrested three individuals on suspicion of trying to smuggle weapons across the border with Lebanon.

This came in a statement published by the army’s spokesman for Arab media Avichai Adraei on his Twitter account.

Adraei said: “The army’s surveys spotted three suspects approaching the border fence between Lebanon and Israel (1948 occupied Palestine) near the village of Ghajar” adding that they were seen while they were throwing a bag across the border area.

He added “After summoning Israeli army and police forces to the scene the three people were arrested and 5 pieces of Mp5 weapons were found in the area in addition to ammunition for an M16 weapon.”

The army did not disclose details of the identity of the three people.

On 26 April Israeli Prime Minister Naftali Bennett said that the army had stopped the smuggling of weapons across the northern border with Lebanon.

At the time Bennett said: “Tonight we thwarted an unusual arms smuggling operation on the Lebanese border where 100 hand grenades were seized which were planned to be used to carry out (terrorist) operations” as he claimed.

Over the past two years the borders between Lebanon and Occupied Palestine have witnessed relative calm. However from time to time the Israeli army announces a “security event” in the region such as arresting “infiltrators or smugglers” shooting down drones or monitoring missile launches from Lebanon.
