Saturday 14-January-2017

The Hebrew newspaper Yediot Ahronot said that a new military robot will serve in the Israeli army to counter Palestinian tunnels in Gaza and assist infantry and engineering (Yahalom) units in the army.

The newspaper’s website mentioned on Friday that the robot which weighs 15 kg is able to work in all weather conditions and terrains as wells as in both light and darkness and inside tunnels and identify any threat in these areas.

According to the website the Israeli army conducted many tests on the robot and recently it was experimentally used by the engineering unit in the West Bank and Gaza’s borders.

The paper pointed out that the robot contains sensors and laser to detect bombs explosives and other weapons.

The Israeli war ministry has ratified last Monday a budget allocating 1 billion and 130 million dollars for the establishment of a concrete wall on the borders between the Gaza Strip and the 1948 occupied Palestinian territories.

The Israeli project includes building concrete walls deep in the ground and smart technology to identify the tunnels.

The paper reported that the preliminary stages of the project have already started noting that the project will reach advanced stages in the coming months and is expected to be finished within two years.

The attack tunnels dug by al-Qassam Brigades the armed wing of Hamas played an important role in the 2014 war on Gaza. The Brigades carried out a series of resistance operations through these tunnels and used them to confront the Israeli army forces inflicting heavy casualties on them.
