Israeli court orders the return of the body of Palestinian to family

Monday 23-January-2017

The Israeli Supreme Court decided Monday evening to return the body of Yaqoub Abu al-Qian who was shot and killed by Israeli police to his family for burial in the Bedouin village of Umm al-Hiran.

Israel’s Channel 2 website said that the court has ordered Israeli police to release Abu al-Qian’s body for burial on Tuesday.

According to Channel 2 the court also decided that “no restriction shall be imposed on the number of mourners” in the funeral.

Abu al-Qian was shot and killed last week under widely contested circumstances during the Israeli police violent raid in Umm al-Hiran that left eight Palestinian structures razed to the ground.

Israeli police claimed that Abu al-Qian carried out an anti-occupation car-ramming attack resulting in the death of a policeman.

However Israeli media sources raised questions whether the police officer was run over by Abu al-Qian’s vehicle or shot by other policemen.

Abu al-Qian was first shot in his right knee while he was posing no threat to anyone when Israeli police opened fire at his vehicle causing him to lose control of the car and ran into officers.
