An Israeli court session is scheduled to be held next Thursday to consider an appeal submitted by cancer-stricken prisoner Nasser Abu Hamid’s attorney for his immediate release the Palestinian Prisoners Society revealed Monday.
Nasser Abu Hamid’s family and prisoner groups said late last week that the 49-year-old was in “his last days” based on an Israeli medical report they received from the Assaf Harofeh hospital near Tel Aviv which recommended his immediate release from prison.
Abu Hamid had earlier rejected dealing with a proposal suggested by his lawyer to submit a petition for pardon to the President of Israel to release him.
Abu Hamid hails from the al-Amari refugee camp in Ramallah. He has been imprisoned since 2002 and was sentenced to life after an Israeli court found him guilty of participating in anti-occupation attacks during the second Palestinian Intifada (uprising).
Abu Hamid was diagnosed with lung cancer in August 2021 after Israeli authorities delayed the provision of medical examinations and treatment.
“I am going to die leaving behind a great people who will not forget my cause or Palestinian prisoners’ cause. I salute all the activities that are held in solidarity and support of me” said Abu Hamid in a letter addressing the Palestine people.
