The Hebrew media revealed on Wednesday that there are efforts by Jewish settler leaders in the West Bank to impose Israel’s sovereignty over the site of Joseph’s Tomb in the east of Nablus City.
According to Kipa news website the Samaria regional council (a council representing settlements in the occupied West Bank) launched a public campaign this week to demand the Israeli government to impose its full control over Joseph’s Tomb in Nablus.
The Hebrew website pointed out that this campaign started following the Palestinian shooting operation that happened a week ago and injured two Israelis including a senior military commander who heads the Samaria regional brigade in the northern West Bank.
Joseph’s Tomb is located inside Area A of the West Bank which is officially under complete Palestinian Authority control.
However the Israeli occupation army still conducts activities there as part of its security coordination with the Palestinian Authority security apparatuses.
Israeli troops and settlers storm almost every week the eastern area of Nablus to perform rituals at the tomb which they think is the resting-place of the biblical patriarch Joseph while locals and Palestinian historians affirm that the grave belongs to a local medieval Muslim Sheikh called Yousef al-Duwaik.
