Israeli soldiers assault Sheikh Yousef and other detainees

Saturday 24-February-2007

RAMALLAH (PIC)– Israeli soldiers of the Nahashon unit have assaulted Sheikh Hassan Yousef a Palestinian MP and other detainees on their way back to prison from Ofer military court family members of the Sheikh reported.

They said that members of the Nahshon a special unit of the Israel Prison Service (IPS) beat up the Sheikh and other detainees and sprayed them with gas injuring a number of them while others fainted.

They asked legal and other concerned institutions to immediately pressure the IOA into halting such quelling measures against Palestinian detainees.

They noted that the military court could not prove any of the charges leveled against Sheikh Yousef and decided to adjourn its hearing into the case to 26/3/2007.

Nahshon unit which was created 33 years ago is responsible for escorting detainees to and from courts and is notorious for its soldiers’ provocative practices and routine beatings of the helpless prisoners.

Saadat Shobaki to stand trial before military courts:
Meanwhile the Israeli attorney general Menachem Mazuz has decided that detained leader of the PFLP Ahmed Saadat and PA officer Fuad Al-Shobaki would stand trial before Israeli military courts rather than civil ones.

The decision would allow easier release of both in any possible prisoners’ exchange deal between the Hebrew state and Palestinian resistance.

Mazuz’s decision came after the central Israeli court in occupied Jerusalem ruled two days ago the retrial of four PFLP activists with charges of killing former Israeli tourism minister Rahba’am Ze’evi who was killed on 17/10/2001 in retaliation to the Israeli assassination of PFLP leader Abu Ali Mustafa.

In the same context Palestinian prisoners in Negev desert prison demanded an improvement in their tragic incarceration conditions and an end to repressive measures including renewal of administration detention without trial or charge especially on approach of their date of release.

They said that the Israeli military court renewed the administrative detentions of both Aziz Fattash 40 and Ibrahim Madi.

Fattash was rushed to the Ramle prison hospital after deterioration of his health condition his family reported adding that he suffered from ulcer and medical neglect.
