Issue of administrative detainees discussed in Ofer jail

Friday 13-April-2018

The Palestinian Commission of Detainees’ and Ex-Detainees’ Affairs said it had received a statement from the ad hoc committee for administrative detainees in Israeli jails on the results of the lengthy meeting that took place in Ofer prison with a representative from the Shin Bet.

According to the commission the ad hoc committee discussed with the Israeli official the issue of the administrative detainees and their boycott of Israeli military courts.

During the meeting the committee agreed to give the competent Israeli authorities a chance to study the issue of the administrative detainees and also to attend another relevant meeting to be held soon with officials from the Shin Bet (Israel’s internal intelligence) the Israeli army and the prison service.

According to the understandings between the two sides the issue of the administrative detainees will be addressed within a specific time frame while the protesting detainees will suspend their escalatory steps which include their refusal to go to infirmaries inside prisons and take medicines as well as their intention to go on open-ended hunger strike.

However the administrative detainees will continue to boycott Israeli military courts.

“If what had been agreed upon was not dealt with seriously or the upcoming extensive meeting did not address the issue of the administrative detainees seriously the escalatory steps would be resumed immediately” the committee of administrative detainees was quoted as saying in its statement.

About 500 administrative internees have boycotted military courts since last February in protest at their detention with no indictment or trial.
