Jordan: Israel’s annexation plan cannot go unanswered

Thursday 11-June-2020

Jordan’s foreign minister Ayman al-Safadi has said that the Israeli plan to annex one-third of the occupied territories represents an obvious violation of international law and cannot go unanswered.

The minister’s remarks came during a joint news conference with his German counterpart Heiko Maas on Wednesday evening in the Jordanian Capital of Amman.

Safadi added that the annexation plan undermines the foundations on which the peace process was laid and torpedoes any opportunity for a comprehensive and just peace.

“We are working with our partners and brothers in order to prevent Israel from carrying out its annexation plan because implementing it means killing any opportunity towards peace” the Jordanian minister said.

For his part the German minister Maas said that his talks with Jordan’s foreign minister touched on the ways to revive negotiations between Palestinians and Israelis.

Maas expressed his country’s concern over Israel’s intent to annex parts of the occupied Palestinian territories.

He affirmed that the European Union is committed to the two-state solution and reject any unilateral plans which he said may pose a serious threat to the region and would lead the situation to escalate.

“We believe this is the right time for diplomacy and we stress the need for both sides to get back to the negotiating table” the German minister said.
