The High Committee for the Defense of the Right of Return comprising national figures and representatives of opposition parties in Jordan deplored the manipulation of international laws by the United States’ administration and Israel and the attempt to liquidate the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees (UNRWA).
In a statement on Monday the Committee said “The idea of amending the mandate of UNRWA and integrating it into the framework of UNHCR is accompanied by calls and campaigns led by certain countries organizations and entities seeking to tamper with the legal and political standing of the right of return.”
The Committee criticized attempts to tamper with the Agency’s work by curtailing its services inciting donor countries to suspend their funding for the Agency’s budget and tampering with educational curricula and other proposals all of which were intended to serve the sole objective of liquidating UNRWA and eliminating its services.
The Committee called upon the United Nations and the UNRWA presidency to provide the necessary clarifications to set things right.
UNRWA serves approximately 5.6 million registered Palestinian refugees in their areas of residence namely the West Bank Gaza Jordan Syria and Lebanon.
