Khan Dunoun Camp: Increasing costs of water deepens crisis

Tuesday 13-December-2022

The Palestinian refugee Hajja Um Ayman al-Sawalmeh 65 raised concern over the unprecedented rising water prices in Khan Dannoun Palestinian refugee camp in Damascus.

Speaking to the PIC reporter Hajja Um Ayman said that the difficult living condition in the refugee camp cannot bear any new price increases.

For his part the local activist Muhammad Tarmah indicated that the price of drinking water has surged dramatically reaching SYP 10000 for 1000 liters saying that 80% poverty rate in the camp is alarming.

The refugee camp is suffering from acute shortage of basic services including electricity and other human needs he told the PIC reporter.

He pointed out that water reaches homes every nearly two hours per two weeks saying that this is not enough to meet the needs of the refugee families.

Tarmah called on UNRWA and the concerned authorities to intervene urgently to alleviate the daily suffering of the refugees.

The Khan Dunoun camp which lies 23 km south of Damascus was officially established in 1950-1951 on an area of 0.03 square kilometers. The camp was home to 12000 Palestinian refugees from villages in northern Palestine.

Like in other areas of Syria displacement unemployment inflation and protection risks are among the main concerns shared by Palestinian refugees and Syrians alike.
