Knesset on alert over new Palestinian move at PACE

Wednesday 24-January-2018

Walla website on Wednesday said that Israel is making intensive efforts to prevent the passage of a draft resolution against Israel and the United States filed by the Palestinians to the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe (PACE).

The Hebrew website reported that a vote is scheduled to be held on Thursday on the resolution noting that a delegation from the Knesset headed by MK Aliza Lavie have been working recently to change the resolution.

It explained that the draft resolution contains several items asking PACE to reject the US recognition of Jerusalem as the capital of Israel and condemn the Israeli settlement construction in the occupied Palestinian territories including East Jerusalem.

The Palestinian draft resolution asks Israel to stop its house demolition policy and underlines that the US can no longer play the role of a central mediator in the peace process because of its latest Jerusalem decision.

MK Lavie expressed concern over PACE’s agreement to hold a vote on the Palestinian request saying that this would encourage the Palestinians to go to international forums instead of direct negotiations.

PACE is an international organization dedicated to upholding human rights democracy and the rule of law. The Assembly is made up of 318 parliamentarians from the national parliaments of the 47-state Council of Europe and it meets four times a year.
