Kuwait calls for providing int’l protection for Palestinians

Wednesday 27-October-2021

The State of Kuwait has called for necessarily ending the Israeli occupation of the Palestinian territories and enabling the Palestinian people to obtain their legitimate political rights including their right to self-determination.

Addressing a UN General Assembly session on Tuesday Kuwait’s deputy envoy to the UN Bader al-Munaikh stressed the importance of providing international protection for the Palestinian people in light of their exposure to gross violations of their human rights describing such step as “a pressing issue that can no longer be delayed and ignored.”

Munaikh stressed that the international community has a responsibility to pressure Israel to stop all its settlement activities in compliance with Security Council Resolution 2334 to lift its illegal land and sea blockade on Gaza and to backtrack on any plan to annex parts of the West Bank or the Jordan Valley adding that such Israeli practices “constitute violations of the international law the UN Charter and the relevant Security Council resolutions.”

He also highlighted UNRWA’s vital and important role that contributes to regional stability and security and expressed his dismay over its exposure to “a political attack targeting its mandate and questioning its integrity with the aim of undermining the Palestinian refugees’ rights.”

The Kuwaiti diplomat affirmed his country’s unwavering support for UNRWA and pointed out that a $20 million grant deal had been signed recently with the refugee agency to keep its programs and services for the Palestinians afloat.

He expressed hope that the Belgium-hosted conference slated for next month would be a success in backing UNRWA urging donor countries to effectively participate in the meeting.
