Lebanese newspaper slams Fatah prior to Abbas’s visit to Beirut

Monday 20-February-2017

The Lebanese newspaper Al-Joumhouria on Monday slammed Fatah Movement for its role in Ain al-Hilweh refugee camp. The article was published on the eve of Palestinian President and Fatah leader Mahmoud Abbas’s visit to Beirut which is scheduled this week.

The newspaper which is affiliated with former Lebanese Interior Minister Elias Murr published a report on Fatah’s role in what is happening in the camp. It said that Lebanon is preparing a security file to be submitted to Abbas in this regard.

The file includes a list of the wanted persons in the camp and the role of the division within Fatah Movement in increasing the numbers of Islamists inside the camp the newspaper elaborated.

The report pointed out that Lebanon is going to ask Abbas for a file on the refugees who migrated from Syria to Ain al-Hilweh camp. The newspaper also stressed that “the Lebanese authorities insist on arresting the wanted people in the camp”.

Tackling such sensitive issues by a newspaper which is also close to the Lebanese Defense Ministry reflects the dissatisfaction of the Lebanese political and security authorities with Fatah practices and its failure to manage the security committee despite all the support it received from Lebanon.
