Palestinian lawmaker Najat Abu Baker from Fatah has appealed to the Palestinian Authority (PA) to stop its political arrest campaigns and provide more space for freedoms in the West Bank as a goodwill gesture towards the Cairo reconciliation agreement.
In press remarks on Thursday MP Abu Baker accused the party obstructing the national reconciliation of strengthening and serving the occupation warning of wasting away the Cairo agreement which she described as “the last attempt to heal the Palestinian rift.”
She expressed her concern over the PA security apparatus’ persistence in arresting and persecuting citizens for no reason closing institutions and suppressing freedoms in the West Bank.
The lawmaker also expressed hope that the PA and its security apparatuses could feel responsible towards the national reconciliation.
“We have ended the chapter of division but we have not yet started the reconciliation” she said.
She called on the Palestinian Legislative Council to hold an emergency session to assess the steps taken to implement the reconciliation agreement.
“The world will never respect us as long as we do not respect each other. Everyone must respect the blood of martyrs who sacrificed themselves for the homeland and put an end to the farce of division that has harmed our people” she underlined.
