MP Barghouthi disappointed over PLO’s executive committee statement

Sunday 3-December-2006

Ramallah – Palestinian lawmaker and head of the independent Palestine bloc in the PLC Dr. Mustafa Al-Barghouthi has expressed disappointment over the statement issued by the PLO’s executive committee considering talks on unity government as a failure.

The irked legislator described language of the statement as “sharp and critical” belying a lot of the points in it which according to him weren’t discussed in the dialogue in the first place.

“What we need now is to immediately form a unity government because the main issue is bigger than a government and the PLO must be immediately restructured based on new basis to form a united Palestinian action front that will lead the Palestinian struggle” Barghouthi underlined.

Barghouthi is exerting tremendous efforts in bridging gaps between Hamas and Fatah factions; but his efforts according to local observers appeared to face difficulties as a result of “stubborn” Fatah stands.

In a related matter the PFLP warned the PLO not to poke its nose in the rift between Fatah faction and the PA presidency on the one hand and Hamas Movement and the PA government on the other hand unless the role was to patch up differences.

“The PLO its executive committee and all national institutions under it must play a reconciliatory role between Hamas and Fatah and to avoid agitating the rift between the two factions” said a statement issued by the Palestinian faction.

Spokesman of the PFLP stressed that the PLO must be developed based on the Cairo understandings warning at the same time of disavowing those understandings.

Fatah faction according to political observers was attempting to disavow the Cairo understandings over fears that it could lose influence in case the PLO is restructured due to the strong presence of Hamas in the Palestinian street in the homeland and in diaspora.

The PFLP spokesman furthermore considered the peace process as “dead” urging that new initiatives must be introduced in harmony with the new variables in the region.
