Ma’ale Adumim annexation bill shelved for second time

Monday 20-March-2017

The ministerial committee for legislation at the Knesset on Sunday postponed for the second time its scheduled debate to approve a bill calling for annexing the West Bank settlement of Ma’ale Adumim to Occupied Jerusalem.

The Hebrew radio said Israeli premier Benjamin Netanyahu and Likud member of the Knesset David Bitan chairman of the government coalition asked for the debate at the ministerial panel to be postponed until after the Knesset’s six-week spring break slated to begin on March 26.

The Knesset ministerial committee had already delayed voting on the controversial bill on March 14.

In radio remarks Israeli Knesset member and minister Yisrael Katz called on the right-wing government to convince the US administration to support Israel’s plan to make Ma’ale Adumim part of Jerusalem and Israel’s sovereignty.

Katz said there would a great chance to rally such US support on the 50th Jerusalem reunification (occupation) anniversary.

He said the government should develop a free construction policy in Jerusalem and West Bank settlements in order to ensure they would remain under Israel’s sovereignty in any future peace agreement.
