Saturday 13-January-2007

DAMASCUS (PIC)– Khaled Mishaal the Hamas Movement’s political bureau chairman has affirmed his Movement’s positive response to all efforts aimed at ending tensions in the Palestinian arena.

The affirmation came during Mishaal’s reception of a delegation of the Organization of Islamic Conference (OIC) headed by ambassador Mahdi Fatahallah who conveyed the OIC secretary general Akmal Al-Din Ihsan Oglo’s greetings and wishes to resume efforts aimed at formation of a Palestinian national unity government and avoiding internal fighting.

The Hamas leader had earlier declared presence of contacts aimed at resuming dialogue among all Palestinian factions for further consultations on formation of the unity government.

He stressed during a telephone contact with Mohammed Mahdi Akef the leader of the Muslim Brotherhood movement in Egypt that Hamas was keen on unity talks.

Akef had made a similar telephone contact with PA chief Mahmoud Abbas and his premier Ismail Haneyya to stress the importance of avoiding a civil war.

Mishaal earlier told Reuters that Hamas would insist on retaining Haneyya as premier in any future unity government. He underlined that the Palestinian people would prevent a civil war but said that foreign pressures must be confronted.
