Mladenov: UN to supervise PA government’s takeover of responsibilities

Monday 25-September-2017

Special UN coordinator for the Middle East peace process Nikolay Mladenov told a news briefing in Gaza that the United Nations (UN) is ready to supervise the Palestinian consensus government’s takeover of responsibilities in the Gaza Strip.

He said that he proposed the plan to Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas in a meeting in the West Bank city of Ramallah earlier this week.

Mladenov expressed willingness to send a UN delegation to Gaza to supervise the process of enabling the government of Prime Minister Rami Hamdallah to assume its responsibilities and takeover ministries.

He welcomed Hamas Movement’s declaration of dissolving the administrative committee it had formed in Gaza.

Mladenov announced that he will brief the leaders of the international community on all the practical developments on the ground after the consensus government starts acting.

The UN official said “The importance in this crucial moment to get benefits out of Cairo reconciliation understandings” adding that all parties should take the opportunity to fix the 10-year internal division which “damaged the Palestinian cause.”

He also said it would take time to resolve the humanitarian crisis that Gaza has been passing through referring mainly to the issue of the severe shortage of electricity.
