Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu is facing a criminal probe into charges of bribery and fraud according to Israeli reports.
Attorney General Avichai Mandelblit ordered the head of police investigations to open the probe into allegations of bribe-taking and aggravated fraud Israel’s Channel 10 reported.
The prime minister will be investigated for two separate cases — campaign donations and a Defense Ministry deal to buy submarines from Germany — and will be summoned for questioning by police in the coming days according to reports.
Police recently received new documents as part of a secret inquiry into the prime minister that began almost nine months ago Channel 2 reported Tuesday.
Based on those files police turned to Mandelblit requesting that he agree to a full criminal investigation.
Reports stated that among the suspected offenses are bribe-taking and aggravated fraud.
The investigation has not been the only one of its kind against Netanyahu. In June Police Commissioner Roni Alsheich gave his go-ahead to the under-wraps probe by the Lahav 433 anti-corruption unit but demanded full secrecy and that no details be leaked to the media.
