New Israeli ambassador shows up in Amman

Monday 16-April-2018

After a long diplomatic tussle between Israel and Jordan Israel’s new ambassador to the kingdom has arrived in Amman on Monday morning.

Despite being appointed in February Amir Weissbrod did not take up his official post in Jordan until April 16.

In July 2017 a shooting perpetrated by an Israeli guard outside the Israeli embassy that left two Jordanians dead froze relations between Jordan and Israel.

The Israeli ambassador was shortly recalled after the murder. The shooting came amid tensions at holy al-Aqsa Mosque after Israeli police installed metal detectors at the entrances to the site which Muslim worshipers firmly rejected and protested.

On January 20 2018 an agreement was reached between the two sides after Israel pledged to shell out compensations to the families of the slain Jordanians and prosecute the guard.

According to official Jordanian sources the new ambassador will submit his file to the Secretary General of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs during the next two days so as to set a date at the Royal Court for protocol procedures.
