The Israeli ministerial committee for legislation is set to discuss a new bill demanding the Israeli government to accelerate the pace of the settlement construction in the occupied West Bank and Jerusalem.
The Israeli MPs who filed the bill claim that the reason for this move is the Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s procrastination in fulfilling his promises regarding the implementation of many settlement projects.
The Hebrew TV channel Seven said quoting the Israeli MPs that Netanyahu had promised to build 300 settlement units in Beit El settlement to the northeast of Ramallah city which has not been achieved to this day.
The channel which is close to the Israeli settlers reported that the majority of members of the ministerial committee intend to vote in favor of the bill before it is tabled with the Knesset for approval next Wednesday if it was passed by the committee.
The UN Security Council adopted on 23rd December 2016 a draft resolution that condemned the settlement construction in the Palestinian territories and demanded its halt.
14 states out of the 15 members of the UN Security Council voted in favor of the resolution while the United States abstained.
The Palestinian-Israeli negotiations ended in April 2014 without achieving any significant results following 9 months of talks sponsored by Europe and the US because of Israel’s refusal to halt the settlement construction accept Palestinian state within the 1967 borders and release long-serving Palestinian prisoners from its jails.
